We're practicing a lot of close reading with our Wonders literacy program.  Close reading requires students to truly dive deep into their reading, making sure all aspects of the text are fully comprehended.  Orally and in writing, students must use evidence from the text to support their answer. Utilizing text features and understanding author's language are two of the important components of close reading.

10 Questions Close Readers Should Ask:
1. What is the text about?
2. Who is the audience for the text?
3. Who is speaking in the text?
4. What happens in the text?
5. What words do I notice?
6. What is the mood or feeling of the text?
7. How does this part relate to what happens before and after?
8. What is not being said?
9. What did the author mean by _____?
10. Why did the author write the text?

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to Literacy at Berlin Memorial School.  I believe in "life long learning" and I'm excited to learn more about blogging this year.  This blog is important for communicating effectively with parents, so please, please let me know what types of things I can post here that will help you and your children.

I hope everyone had a terrific summer.  Our summer reading program was a huge success, with many students meeting and exceeding the goal of 600 minutes for the entire summer.  We had so much fun enjoying extra recess and a kickball game.

I look forward to another great school year.

Happy Reading,

Mandy
